A Message from the Chairwoman

Dear 14th District Executive Committee Members, and fellow Republicans;

Hello from Texas!  I have spent a few days in Texas with my family and can only say what a great time it is to be in a long time conservative state!  Be sure to read the “Juneteenth” celebration article below written by Christina Barr. Texas was significant in the celebration of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is a celebration with which many are not familiar.  It celebrates the Emancipation Proclamation, signed by Republican President Abraham Lincoln.  That Proclamation was slow to reach all corners of the rapidly growing country. Christina, a former 14th Committee member, and current friend and MRP Coalitions Vice Chair takes it from there in her special submission to our newsletter. Take time to read it and understand the emotions Juneteenth carries still today.  So to all: Happy Juneteenth on June 19!

Congratulations to the many Republicans who decided to run for Precinct Delegate! The primary election is soon and absentee ballots will be mailed out late June. If you are in a contested PD race, do your work.  Knock on doors or maybe send a mailer to Republicans in your precinct. Good luck your re-election / election on August 7 for this very important role in the Republican party. Thank you for your dedication and diligence to keep MICHIGAN RED and lay the groundwork to re-elect President TRUMP in 2020!

The slogan “remember in November” is to remind us that not a single Democrat voted to allow taxpayers to keep more of their own hard earned income!!  Not one Democrat! We need to tell our friends, co-workers, neighbors that Senator Debbie Stabenow joined with all Democrats who voted NO regarding Trump’s historic tax bill.   Remember in November!

This campaign cycle--to date--has had one very pleasant “surprise”.  It is that the Republicans have so many young “Millennial age” candidates mounting serious efforts to earn seats in the Michigan House.  Those who know me will know that I will NOT endorse anyone as each of these three candidates is in a contested primary.  My point is look at the conservative and Republican and young candidates our Party is privileged to field:

  • Chase Turner is running for Michigan’s District 38 House seat.  Chase is a pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, and Trump supporting Republican.  He is 23 years old.
  • Kevin Tatulyan is running for Michigan’s District 39 House seat.  Kevin was Trump’s Michigan Coalitions Chair and is a small business owner.  He is 28 years old.
  • Mike Banerian is running for Michigan’s District 40 House seat.  He is a former MRP Vice Chair and an Elector (Electoral College member) for Trump.  He is 23 years old.

Is this important?  You bet it is!  Our Republican Party and principles are attracting a pipeline of talented and energized younger candidates.  Win or lose in August, I am so proud that the next generation of Americans is still on board with our Republican platform.  Whether you support these specific candidates or don’t please thank each for being engaged.  We are blessed!

With all the amazing events coming to Michigan don’t miss these two.  On June 21, MJAC will host a meeting to discuss Islamic censorship in the Michigan Governor’s race.  Talk about timely.  The very next night, Corey Lewandowski and Diamond & Silk will be in Troy.  What a great night that should be! I know that this is a hectic season for those in grassroots politics.  All who care about a candidate are very, very busy with campaign work leading up to the Michigan primary.  Thanks to all you hard working VOLUNTEERS who make this system work!

Lewandowski and Diamond & Silk Come to Troy

An event is coming to Michigan on June 22  that many are calling the biggest campaign event in Michigan (well, maybe other than another Trump visit!) during this 2018 election cycle.

Corey Lewandowski and Diamond & Silk are coming to Michigan!

Corey was just named to lead VP Mike Pence’s Great America PAC that has ONE purpose. That purpose is to elect in 2018 more Senators and Representatives who support Trump.

Lewandowski was also Trump’s first campaign manager and remains on the short list to have the same role for 2020!

Joining him will be television and internet sensations Diamond & Silk!  They first came on to the Trump scene during the campaign as outspoken Trump supporters.

The event will be held at the American Polish Cultural Center with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the program starting at  7 p.m.

 Executive Committee Member and Treasurer Profile:   William Wallace

William B. Wallace (West Bloomfield) has embodied conservative Republican ideals since his childhood, but his political consciousness did not come until much later.

Wallace was buried in his work from an early age, a trait endued by his father.

“My dad could not read or write, but was brilliant on fixing stuff,” Wallace says.  Recent_WBW_photo.jpg

Although he says he has effectively been a Republican  “as long as I can remember,” he was dismayed by politics and did not even vote until he was in his 40s.

After going Wayne State University at night, Wallace went to work as an auditor for Ernst & Ernst — now Ernst & Young — in 1967 in Detroit’s Buhl Building.

“Public accounting in those days was pretty much up or out, so I worked very hard  — 60 to 70 hours a week — and did not have much time to do anything else,” Wallace says. “It did pay off by eventually becoming a partner and then the partner in charge of the Detroit Office Consulting practice. Then I took that group from a historical money loser to being the most profitable consulting practice in all of Ernst worldwide.  

“During this time, I became very adept and experienced with acquisitions, valuation of businesses and in leveraged transactions, so much so that the partner in charge of the Detroit office and me left the Ernst & Whinney partnership in 1987 (unheard of in those days) to form our own buyout and financial consulting firm called Equity Partners Ltd.

They had the intent “to buy businesses in leveraged transactions for our own account, as well as to consult on those kinds of matters with other buyers and sellers.  Over a 20-year period, we did 11 transactions for our own account and have since sold each of those businesses.”

“During the 2003 to 2005 time frame, myself and another person decided that banking needed a more customer-oriented bank so he and I bankrolled the initial $1 million to obtain a federal charter and opened the doors of what today is Main Street Bank.  I continue to own a substantial, but minority interest in the bank.”

After living through the first year of the Obama administration and what Wallace calls “the  Democratic induced financial meltdown (Dodd - Frank’s ill-advised dictates to Fannie and Freddie, which ended up creating the mortgage crisis), the illegal hosing of the GM bondholders and a government bailout –  I started getting very active in a grass-roots manner.”

He says now 14th District Chairwoman Janine Kateff recruited him to become a precinct delegate in 2010. Wallace says he worked hard in the 2012 election cycle to try to defeat Obama and has been a precinct delegate since that time.

“I have lived in the west side of the Detroit suburbs, except for one year in Grosse Pointe,” Wallace says. “I have 5 kids and 11 grandkids, and we pulled my youngest two from the public school system as I became dismayed with what was being taught.  Now, each one of my grandkids is attending private Christian schools or have graduated from a private Christian school.”

Wallace, aged 73, says he  prefers the Wilkow Majority description associated with talk radio host Andrew Wilkow.

“I am a conservative first, a constitutionalist second and a Republican third.”

“I believe in limited government and am appalled by the intrusion of the federal government and its excessive spending,” Wallace says.  

“Many parts of the federal government are unconstitutional and ineffective to the point of being harmful.”

Happy Birthday President Trump

The best gift (other than his re-election in 2020) that President Trump could receive is a great happy birthday cheer from Michigan! And he knows that the road to the White House in 2020 runs through Michigan.

JMAC Features Leading Speaker about  Islamic Censorship

The Jewish Michigan Action Council will host Deborah Weiss, Esq., on June 21 in West Bloomfield.  She is a Senior Fellow with Center for Security Policy where she specializes in free speech and terrorism-related issues. Weiss is considered an expert on the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, CAIR and Islamist censorship.

She is the author of several books, including her recently released book, "Islamist Influence in Hollywood".  Weiss’ work regularly appears in FrontPage Magazine, National Review Online, The Weekly Standard, The Washington Times, and many others.

Juneteenth:  A Special Article

Juneteenth is a special celebration.  The following article was written by Christina Barr (Pontiac), who is Coalitions Vice Chair of the Michigan Republican Party.  Her column is reprinted here as submitted. Christina has also authored ten published books. She is self employed (www.raisethebarrproductions.com).  The 14th District thanks Christina for her time and passion for the Republican Party.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” These were the words written in our Declaration of Independence.

“Self-evident,” it claims. A word used to describe this term is “obvious”. The irony does not escape me. In 1776, a great and heroic group of men came together to denounce their allegiance from what they deemed to be a tyrannical government, and to forge their destiny in a country where “all men are created equal”. But in 1777, all men were not treated equal and did not possess the God given rights that our Founders proudly boasted. They inherited an ugly tradition from the British: owning slaves. And though it was a dark cloud hanging over the hearts of many, it was not abolished in a country supposedly founded in freedom. The truth is, the world was a radically different place. I am a descendent of slaves, and I very much appreciate the present abhorrence of slavery in America. However, in 1777, it was a norm and perfectly legal.

So, how can our Founding Fathers proclaim such bold and “obvious” truths, when they themselves were unwilling to see it bloom into fruition?

It is not an unheard-of occurrence for God to bless complicated, flawed, or even unrighteous men with vision or a great purpose. It is also reoccurring in history for wiser and more tolerant generations to carry the torch of freedom, ignited by small and passionate sparks of their predecessors.

In the 1800’s, slavery became an extremely polarizing issue. The Whig Party became fractured between those that believed slavery was an abomination and those that wished to focus on less morally complicated issues, in order to appease constitutes financially caught up in cotton. Even some in the Democrat Party left to form the brief Free Soil Party, to oppose the expansion of slavery in the Western territories. Though their efforts continued to fan the flames of freedom, they did not outlast the overwhelming political power of the Democrat Party.

So, who rose to stand in the gap? Who took up arms and fought for freedom’s sake? Who fought for the soul of this nation? There is only one major political party in our nation that formed for the sake of the “self-evident” truths of our nations. On July 6th, 1854, the first statewide Republican convention was held near Jackson, Michigan. Here, they elected candidates and created their platform.

The Democrats quickly grew to despise the Republicans as they gained momentum. They would refer to their enemies as “Black Republicans”, which was meant to be a great and offensive slur. Regardless of their hatred and desperate grip to slavery, the self-evident truth became more real in the hearts of Americans everywhere. Abraham Lincoln was elected, the Civil War was waged, and the Emancipation Proclamation was written.

The declaration of freedom was slow reaching Texas, and slaves were not fully liberated until June 18th, 1865. On June nineteenth, former slaves rejoiced in the streets of Galveston. Juneteenth is a time to look back on our history, be thankful those that sacrificed for the freedoms of men, and to be grateful for the strength of our ancestors that endured such an injustice so that their kin could live to see further accomplishments.

Republicans continued to be the party that fought for Civil Rights, and they fought for Women’s Suffrage. Today, another controversial fight for the “self-evident” truth of Life is waged across the country, and it is mostly Republicans that bear that torch. I pray our future generations will come to abhor abortion as much as they do slavery, especially since organizations like Planned Parenthood—that prides themselves in servicing low-income and minority communities—are prominent examples of systemic racism.

On this upcoming Juneteenth, I encourage all Americans to reflect on the self-evident truths professed in our Declaration of Independence. Though we reverence our Founding Fathers and their brilliance, and we proudly boast of the historical significance of Republican trailblazers, our generation will be subjected to darkness if we cannot run with a vision of freedom.

Make a commitment to ensure that wherever injustice dwells, it will be rooted out. Stand up for Life, an unalienable right that all who read this were afforded. Lastly, continue to fight for equal opportunity, so all men and women may have their right to pursue happiness. We may not all begin at the same starting point in life, but in a nation where liberty reigns, the American Dream is available to all.

Letter to the Editor:  College Conservative Grant Strobl

Republican activists are encouraged to keep the conservative voice in the media’s mailbox (if not in their coverage).  To that end, 14th Executive Committee member Grant Strobl wrote an Op-Ed for The Detroit News.

Democrat Rep. Brenda Lawrence “Votes for Us” in Washington

Your Democratic 14th Congressional District U.S. Representative Brenda Lawrence (D-MI) has been busy in Washington, D.C.  Here is a recap of several of her recent and shocking votes.   Her role in supporting the Democrat Party line, obstructing President Trump and not really looking out for our Michigan values can be seen very clearly.   

Her votes often are like this:  think of a logical idea/opinion and then vote the opposite way.   After considering her positions, please feel free to call her office at 202-225-5802:

  • HB 1917 passed 234 to 180 with Lawrence voting AGAINST.  This law blocks the EPA from actually regulating kilns that make bricks and clay products until courts rule on the legality of the EPA’s regulations.  Thought “legal” was a good thing.
  • HB 1119 passed 215 to 189 with Lawrence voting AGAINST.  This would ease restrictions on power plants that use coal.  Guess the war on coal continues with the Democrat party.
  • HB 772 passed 266 to 157 with Lawrence voting AGAINST.  This law would revise the mandates that restaurants disclose detailed calorie content of all menu items.
  • HB 1116 passed 247 to 169 with Lawrence voting AGAINST.  This would require federal regulators to apply existing regulations narrowly to limit the compliance burden on entities they regulate.  Seems like common sense regulation.
  • HB 4263 passed 246 to 170 with Lawrence voting AGAINST.    This would increase the threshold that triggers federal regulations from $50 million to $75 million.  The notion was to make it easier for smaller companies to raise capital through crowdfunding.
  • HB 5247 passed 267 to 149 with Lawrence voting AGAINST.  This would allow terminal patients use to non-FDA approved treatments, drugs and therapies. This is sometimes called the “right to try” law.  Seems cruel to limit a terminally ill patient from even trying! Note to Brenda: This is nearly universally popular with mere voters.
  • Joint Resolution 2 passed 233 to 184 with Lawrence voting AGAINST.  This was to approve a balanced budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, except in defined circumstances like war or national security.
  • HB 4 (Prevailing Wage Amendment) failed 172 to 243 with Lawrence voting AGAINST.  This would have prohibited use of “prevailing wage” on certain federal contracts.  Such “prevailing wages” are set by union reports and not by market conditions. Thanks, Brenda, for costing taxpayers more money.
  • Senate Joint Resolution 57 passed 234 to 175 with Lawrence voting AGAINST.  This would overturn “guidance” issued by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (Senator Warren’s invention) that affected auto loans NOT issued by dealerships.
  • HB 5698 passed 382 to 35 with Lawrence voting FOR.  This is a rare support for a Trump era bill. This law would make it a federal crime to injure or kill a police officer.  Finally something that Lawrence agrees with!
