“Remember the First Ladies” Author to Speak in Plymouth, MI
Celebration of the First Ladies’ Roles in America’s 250 Years of Freedom
Plymouth, MI; [Immediate Release]: “Remember the First Ladies: 250 Years of Making History” national speaking tour comes to Michigan. This important presentation by Diana Carlin, as best selling author, will be at the historic Phoenix Mill (located at 15000 Edward N Hines Dr., Plymouth, MI 48170) at 6 p.m. on February 24. Carlin’s presentation will look at the effect first ladies have had throughout American history, starting with the historical roles of Martha Washington and Abigail Adams during the Revolutionary War and through today.
Diana Carlin, Professor Emerita of Communication at St. Louis University, is co-author of "Remember the First Ladies”, a best selling book that examines the influence of first ladies on topics such as civil rights, political campaigns, major political speeches, and the White House across the span of the nation's history. The Smithsonian Scholars selected Diana's book as a Best Book of 2024.
“Many first ladies played important roles behind the scenes in presidential decision making or took on groundbreaking roles of their own,” said Carlin. Her comments will focus on the Revolutionary War period where American women played important, if unsung, roles in the formation of the USA.
Carlin will be joined by Myra Gutin, who is Professor Emerita of Communication, Journalism, and Media at Rider University (Lawrenceville, NJ). She has taught numerous classes on the American First Lady, Political Communication, Campaigning, and the Presidency. Gutin was a founder of FLARE (the First Ladies Association for Research and Education).
“During the year-long recognition of America’s 250th Anniversary, we are thrilled to bring Diana Carlin and Myra Gutin to help us celebrate right here in Michigan,” said 11th District Committee Chair Debra Oestreich. “They appear as part of our “250 Years of Freedom” speakers series.”
