14th District GOP Votes to Suspend Immigration
Resolution Says Immigration is Unsafe until vetting Improves
Royal Oak, MI; [Immediate Release]: The 14th Congressional District Republican Executive Committee has voted overwhelmingly to support suspension of further refugee immigration to Michigan from the Middle East.
The suspension called for would continue until such time as the vetting process is substantially improved and is more transparent, and until the financial cost is known by taxpayers according to the resolution adopted at the Committee’s regular monthly meeting on January 21, 2016.
“This is a common sense resolution that moves to first protect our citizens, while not closing the door to refugees who need help,” said Janine Kateff, Chairwoman for the 14th District. “Our governments, both federal and Michigan, need to be much more transparent about their processes, the costs related to immigration and who will pay for what,” Kateff said. “We need assurance that we will be as safe after any refugee arrives as we were before. Frankly, many citizens feel that these refugees would rather not be forced to relocate. Many may just want help and protection where they live. All remedies, other than a mandated relocation program, need to be fully examined.”
The adopted resolution says in part ”that no State funds shall be expended to assist in the United States Refugee Resettlement Program unless such resettlement is approved by the State legislature and the county where the resettlement is to occur. Local communities will not be forced to accept ….refugees if they are unable and/or unwilling to assume the costs and risks.”
